Course Description
According to the PMBOK Guide, Project Communications Management encompasses the processes necessary to meet the information needs of the project and its stakeholders.
This course equips learners with the skills needed for ensuring timely and appropriate planning, collection, creation, distribution, storage, retrieval, management, monitoring, control, and ultimate disposition of project information.
The course content is applicable to project management across various industries and sectors, enabling the application of Project Communications Management across different project application areas.
Course Objectives
After completing this course, learners will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following Project Communications Management processes:
- Plan Communications Management. The process of developing an appropriate approach and plan for project communication activities based on the information needs of each stakeholder or group, available organizational assets, and the needs of the project.
- Manage Communications. The process of ensuring timely and appropriate collection, creation, distribution, storage, retrieval, management, monitoring, and the ultimate disposition of project information.
- Monitor Communications. The process of ensuring the information needs of the project and its stakeholders are met.
Key Concepts
The key concepts for Project Communications Management include:
- Communication is the process of exchanging information, intended or involuntary, between individuals and/or groups.
- Communication activities include internal and external, formal and informal, written and oral.
- Communication includes developing strategies and plans for suitable communications artifacts, and the application of skills to enhance effectiveness.
- Information can be collected in meetings, conversations, and by pulling information from electronic repositories.
- Once collected, it is distributed as indicated in the project management communications plan.
- Communications describe the means by which information can be sent or received, either through activities, such as presentations, or artifacts, such as project reports, or project documentation.
- Effective communication creates a bridge between diverse stakeholders whose differences will generally have an impact or influence on the project execution or outcome.
- Communication can be directed upwards to senior management stakeholders, downwards to team members, or horizontally to peers.
- This will affect the format and content of the message.
